To achieve a state of profound mental tranquility—described in the manuals as “pure tranquility and non-action” (清靜無為) or a completely “calm mind” (心境平靜)—the traditional sources outline several specific training methods rooted in Daoist philosophy.

You can actively cultivate this extreme mental tranquility through the following practices:

  • Practicing the “Round Form” (圓拳): The traditional t’ai chi manuals explicitly state that practicing the continuous “Round Form” of the solo routine is the absolute “best method to seek stillness within motion” (動中求靜). By executing the entire routine as an unbroken, circular flow—like floating clouds and flowing water—your mind naturally becomes deeply tranquil. The texts note that successful practitioners who train this way achieve a level of physical comfort and mental peace that “cannot be bought with money”.
  • Progressing to the Highest Stage of Neigong: Through dedicated Tai Chi Internal Power (Neigong) practice, you are meant to progress through stages of integration until you reach the ultimate state of mastery: “Heaven and Man become One” (天人合一). The manuals describe this as a profound state of complete self-forgetfulness (忘我境界), reflecting the ancient Daoist ideal where “Heaven and earth are born together with me, and the myriad things and I are one”.
  • Weaponry for Spiritual Cultivation (陶冶性靈): While it may seem counterintuitive, practicing Tai Chi weapons (like the sword, broadsword, or spear) is also used to cultivate mental peace. By intensely focusing on the intricate, flowing postures until you reach a state where “the body and the weapon are one” (身械合一), you deeply cultivate your spirit and achieve a profound resonance with nature.
  • Embracing “Softness” (柔) to Clear the Mind: In Daoist theory, “stillness” and “clarity” are inherently linked to “softness”. By intentionally removing all stiff, brute force from your movements and focusing entirely on relaxation, you prevent the impulsive, aggressive mindset that comes from “hard” martial arts. This physical softness directly translates into a rational, clear, and undisturbed mind.
