If you want to learn a system of self defence that emphasises the use of intelligence rather than brute power, Tai Chi self defence could be for you.

Not everyone is gifted with natural size, strength or athleticism. Tai Chi was created to allow all of us to become effective at defending ourselves at all ranges of combat.

The long slow sequence of the tai chi form, acts not only as a body and mind training method, but also as a huge database of fighting technique’s.

Subtle defensive movements, precise striking with all parts of the body to vital points, locks, sweeps and throws all play part of the self defence training.

The basic training is carried out in drills, called freefighting, where we practice defending and countering our partner. There are 48 core drills that are practiced from slow to full speed when you’re ready. With regular practice you learn to efficiently and effectively use minimal force to defend and then use whole body power to strike potently and decisively at the opponents weakest points.

After a period of time all the techniques become very familiar and easy to use and then we can feel like all the techniques are just one. At this stage we can be confident in our ability to defend ourselves in any situation.

Other elements of the syllabus build up our strength, endurance and power for added effectiveness. Some students enjoy sparring or entering competitions to further gain experience or just for the sport of it.
