Practical T’ai Chi for the Modern Era

A Philosophy of Practicality and Internal Power

Thirteen Dynamics distinguishes itself by re-establishing T’ai Chi Chuan not as a performative health exercise, but as a rigorous martial science rooted in the Daoist principle of “Soft Overcoming Hard” (以柔克剛). This is the calculated application of internal power, where a practitioner utilizes the transitions between Yin and Yang to neutralize aggression without direct opposition.

Synthesizing the I Ching (Book of Changes), the school teaches that combat is a state of perpetual transition. This is modeled by the Twelve Big Hexagrams, tracking the movement from absolute softness (Kun) to absolute hardness (Qian). However, the “Practical” designation is validated by the historical principle of “Avoiding the solid and striking the void” (避實擊虛).

This philosophy won wars long before it won matches. We see it in the Battle of Fei River (383 AD), where the vastly outnumbered Eastern Jin utilized intelligence to shatter a force of millions; in the “Two Peaches” strategy of the Spring and Autumn period, which neutralized three formidable warriors through psychological insight; and in General Yue Fei’s legendary Hooked Spear tactics, which ignored the armored bulk of the Jin cavalry to strike at the “void”—the unprotected legs of the horses.

The Strategic Edge

This philosophical grounding provides practitioners with a distinct competitive advantage. By mastering the transitions of the hexagrams, students develop the mental clarity to remain calm under duress and the physical resilience to redirect superior force. You do not win through brute strength; you win by being the more intelligent, responsive system in the room.

This transition from abstract Daoist philosophy to concrete tactical application is the defining characteristic of our lineage.

From Wudang Mountain to Thirteen Dynamics

In traditional martial arts, lineage serves as a vital seal of authenticity that confirms a practitioner is the custodian of a proven path. Thirteen Dynamics occupies a prestigious position in an arc tracing back to the legendary Zhang Sanfeng of Wudang Mountain.

Chang San Feng

This path was refined into a formidable fighting system by Grandmaster Cheng Tin Hung, whose “Martial Arts Record” documents a legacy of dominance. In 1957, Cheng solidified this reputation by defeating the Taiwan champion by a significant margin, and in 1971, his association secured the overall team championship at the South East Asian Martial Arts full contact championship in Taipei.

The institutional weight of the Hong Kong Tai Chi Association provided the catalyst for the system’s global expansion. A pivotal validation occurred in 1980 at the 5th International Chinese Martial Arts Full Contact Championships in Malaysia. There, the lineage’s efficacy was proven at the highest level: Tang Chi-kin (唐志堅) secured the Middleweight Class B title, Dan Docherty (唐戚達) won the Super-Heavyweight Championship.

Cheng Tin Hung’s school held a competitive record of 31 victories in 32 fights. This astounding 98% record is astounding, particularly in the brutal full contact lei tei fights of south east Asia. These fights were essentially no holds barred free for all’s against powerful and well trained martial artists of all other styles.

The Founder’s Path: Neil Rosiak’s Martial Evolution

The career of Neil Rosiak represents a rare synthesis of traditional mastery and real-world application. Neil began his journey in Praying Mantis Kung Fu but made a strategic pivot to T’ai Chi at age thirteen. While his training was anchored in the scholarly rigors of the Cheng Tin Hung tradition, his expertise was forged in the contrast between “the palace and the pavement.”

Neil’s professional history includes high-stakes security work, ranging from the volatile environments of London’s nightlife to providing executive VIP protection for global icons such as Prince and Usher. In these “front-line” scenarios, the “Twelve Big Hexagrams” of transition must occur in microseconds.

If a technique fails to neutralize a threat in the first three seconds, it is strategically irrelevant. This professional experience ensures that the Thirteen Dynamics curriculum is grounded in the pavement-tested reality of high-prestige security rather than studio-bound theory. This evolution led Neil to seek a deeper scientific understanding of the body’s potential.

The Intersection of Tradition and Science: Strength & Conditioning

To produce elite practitioners, Thirteen Dynamics marries ancient wisdom with modern physiological science. This approach is anchored by Neil Rosiak’s Master’s degree in Strength and Conditioning from the University of Edinburgh. By viewing traditional “Nei Kung” (Internal Strength) and other tai chi practices through the lens of sports science, we optimize human performance with surgical precision.

This dual approach ensures the student’s longevity and power, creating an athlete who is both “Internal” and “External.” This scientific framework has resulted in an unparalleled competitive record.

A Legacy of Excellence: The Competitive Record

Thirteen Dynamics is a “champion factory” with an empirical record of victory that spans decades. The name of the school itself is rooted in the “Five Elements and eight dynamics” (十三勢)—the fundamental movements and directions of the art. Our methodology is proven in the heat of international competition:

Student after competing at the London Tai Chi championships
  • 1993: Neil Rosiak wins the British Pushing Hands Championship at age 18.
  • 1994: At the Chung Hwa Pushing Hands Championship in Taiwan—the “heartland of the art”—Neil remains undefeated in all matches, a major signal of technical mastery.
  • 1997: Neil competes in the Professional MMA (Vale Tudo) Heavyweight trials and championship, proving the system’s efficacy in “No Holds Barred” formats.
  • 2000: At the European Pushing Hands Championship in Holland, Neil and his student Sami Berik achieved a record of 23 undefeated matches.

The Empirical Proof

These victories are not anecdotal; they are data points. Neil has subsequently trained dozens of British, European, and World champions using this exact framework. When you train at Thirteen Dynamics, you are utilizing a methodology that has been tested and proved dominant in the art’s most demanding arenas.

Excellence through Community

A high-performance martial environment requires “soft” elements to sustain its “hard” results. At Thirteen Dynamics , community and friendship are not secondary benefits; they are core pillars. We move beyond jargon-heavy instruction to focus on three levels of mastery: Internal and External Unity (內外合一), Mind and Body Unity (身心合一), and the ultimate state of “Heaven and Man Unity” (天人合一).

We reframe “community” as a collective pursuit of these states. This is a culture of clarity and accessibility, where mastery is shared rather than hidden. We believe that the highest levels of “Internal/External Harmony” are only achievable in an environment of mutual respect and deep enjoyment. Our mission is to transform practitioners through a shared commitment to the Thirteen Dynamics way.
